A Philippine police officer was killed during a raid on an illegal cockfight after a rooster's blade sliced an artery in his leg.<br>The freak accident happened yesterday in Northern Samar when Lieutenant Christian Bolok picked up a fighting cock as he gathered evidence at the illegal event.<br>Its bladed spur struck the femoral artery in his left thigh and he bled to death, provincial police chief Colonel Arnel Apud said. <br>Cockfighting, or 'tupada', is a popular blood sport in the Philippines where money is bet on the outcome of a fight between two birds armed with bladed spurs, known as 'gaffs'.<br> Police officer Lieutenant Christian Bolok was killed yesterday during a police raid on a cockfight in Northern Samar, the Philippines, after a rooster's blade sliced his femoral artery<br> RELATED ARTICLES

The lethal sport has been banned along with other sporting and cultural events during the coronavirus pandemic to prevent crowds from gathering.<br>Mr Apud said: 'It was an unfortunate accident and a piece of bad luck that I cannot explain.<br>'I could not believe it when it was first reported to me. <br>'This is the first time in my 25 years as a policeman that I lost a man due to a fighting cock's spur.' <br>  Cockfighting is a popular blood sport in the Philippines where money is bet on the outcome of a fight, often to the death, between two birds armed with bladed spurs (stock image)<br>Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the police chief said: 'I have a heavy heart as we have lost a brother who sacrificed his own life in the name of service. <br>'The PNP grieves the untimely death of Lieutenant Bolok and extends its deepest sympathy to his family and relatives.'<br>The Northern Samar Police Provincial Office said: 'The Northern Samar Police Provincial Office grieves with the sudden death of Lieutenant Christian Bolok, officer in-charge of San Jose Municipal Police Station who paid ultimate sacrifice in the name of service.'<br>Three people were arrested and two fighting cocks seized along with two sets of spurs in the raid in San Jose town where Lieutenant Bolok was the police chief.<br> In August, the Northern Samar provincial government issued a warning against illegal cockfighting after four people at a fight tested positive for coronavirus (stock image)<br>Police also identified three other suspects who have not been arrested. <br>Officer confiscated seven fighting cocks, two sets of fighting spurs and PHP 550 (£8.74) in bet money.<br>In August, the Northern Samar provincial government issued a warning against illegal cockfighting after four people at a fight tested positive for coronavirus.<br>Before the health crisis, the blood sport was allowed only in licensed cockpits during Sundays and legal holidays and during local fiestas for not more than three days. <br>
